Baani Da Paari’vaar

Baani Da Paari’vaar is a children’s book created by Sarbdeep Johal which teaches the reader the words and names used for different family members in Punjabi. I had heard about these books somewhere on social media but slipped my mind. During a stroll through my favorite store, Indigo, I was browsing the children’s section, as I usually do in case I find something for my nephew, and there on the shelves were two of Sarbdeep’s books; Baani Da Paari’vaar and Let’s Learn Gurmukhi Through Animals. I knew right away I need to grab these for my nephew and niece! My nephew loves reading time before bed and I knew these would be a good addition to his book shelf. To be honest, I was tempted to keep them to myself to work on my own Punjabi, these books are great tools to introduce Punjabi to children.

If you have little ones in your family, these books are a great tool to teach them Punjabi and also to help them connect with older generations. The books are written in Gurmukhi, the most common script used for the Punjabi language, along with English and English transliteration of the Punjabi words. I felt a sense of pride to see a local Punjabi author’s work on the shelves of Indigo. I have noticed the slowly increasing local authors being added on the shelves in the past but this was amazing to me because it was an inclusion of our Punjabi community which you don’t see quite often. I’d like to take a quick moment to thank Sarbdeep for putting these books together and so glad to see them on the shelves at Indigo!

  1. Thank you Nishjot, your kind words and motivation is much appreciated. Baanibooks are also available online at Amazon in paperback. We need more people to review the work to be recognized in the community. I really appreciate your blog and love for mother tongue. Hoping to write more to educate the young ones about our culture and heritage along with Canadian values
    With lots of love
